GoatCounter is simple web analytics, as a free hosted service or an app you run yourself.

Why it’s listed

It suits personal sites, blogs and small organisations that want visitor numbers without tracking people.

It's listed because it counts visits 'without cookies or persistently storing any personal data' and is funded by donations1. Data sits on Hetzner servers in Finland and Germany, and it's run by Martin Tournoij in Ireland2. NLnet's NGI0 fund has supported it1.

The trade-off

It's essentially a one-person project, and the free hosted plan isn't meant for very large sites.

Price

Free (donations welcome); self-hosting is free too.
