Ethical Alternatives & Resources
Tools, services and organisations that do less harm than the default choice, in 43 categories. We’re re-checking every entry against our checklist, one category at a time.
Feed Readers
RSS readers that bring you new posts from the sites you choose, in order, with no algorithm picking what you see. We look for open-source code, no tracking and open standards like RSS and OPML, so your subscriptions can move with you.
Our top picks: Miniflux, an open-source reader that strips trackers from what you read, free to self-host or $15 a year hosted. And NetNewsWire, a free, open-source reader that only collects opt-in crash logs; the trade-off is that it’s for Mac, iPhone and iPad only. FreshRSS is a community-run option you host yourself.
How we choose: we check every reader against the 6 principles in our manifesto (who owns it and how it makes money, what it collects, how it treats people, honesty, openness and staying power). This list was last checked on 13 October 2026.
