Tools, services and organisations that do less harm than the default choice, in 43 categories. We’re re-checking every entry against our checklist, one category at a time.
Video platforms and tools, from federated video sharing to media servers you run at home. For a YouTube alternative, we look for no ads or tracking, open-source code and a non-profit or community behind it.
Our top pick is PeerTube, a federated, ad-free video platform from the French non-profit Framasoft, spread across 1,581 independent servers, each with its own moderation rules. For your own films, music and photos, Jellyfin is a free, volunteer-built media server backed by 2,418 donors; the trade-off is that you run it on your own hardware.
How we choose: we check every platform against the 6 principles in our manifesto (who owns it and how it makes money, what it collects, how it treats people, honesty, openness and staying power). This list was last checked on 13 October 2026.
