Wikis

Wikis anyone can edit, on sustainability, low-cost travel and saving food and goods from waste. We look for open licences, non-profit or volunteer stewards, and recent edits that show a wiki is still alive.

Our top pick is Appropedia, a sustainability wiki of 24,000+ articles on appropriate technology, energy, water and building, run by a California non-profit and shared under CC BY-SA; like any open wiki, quality varies from page to page. Hitchwiki is a volunteer-written guide to hitchhiking spots, routes and border tips, edited almost daily.

How we choose: each wiki is checked against the 6 principles in our manifesto: who owns it and how it makes money, what it collects, how it treats people, honesty, openness and staying power. We last checked them on 13 October 2026.
