Tools, services and organisations that do less harm than the default choice, in 43 categories. We’re re-checking every entry against our checklist, one category at a time.
Apps, videos and guides for children, and for the adults choosing for them. For kids’ apps and media, we look for no ads or data sales, and design that helps children learn and make things, with no endless feeds.
Our top picks: Scratch, free block-based coding from the non-profit Scratch Foundation, where kids make games, stories and animations; the site uses cookies and Google Tag Manager for analytics. And Tinybop, science and nature apps for a one-off £2.99 to £3.99, whose privacy policy rules out buying or selling data, though a few apps haven’t been updated since 2021 or 2022.
How we choose: we check every app and site against the 6 principles in our manifesto (who owns it and how it makes money, what it collects, how it treats people, honesty, openness and staying power). Last checked on 13 October 2026.
